NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (GIC) – English
The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (GIC) is a globally recognised qualification awarded by NEBOSH, UK. It provides a practical understanding of workplace health and safety and is the foundation for the NEBOSH International Diploma.
Charisma Workforce Development (CWD) is a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner (Partner No. 1382), the highest tier of NEBOSH learning partner accreditation. CWD prepares safety professionals across Pakistan and the Gulf for internationally recognised HSE qualifications.
The course is suitable for managers, supervisors, engineers, fresh graduates and workers in any sector who need a broad understanding of health and safety. There are no formal entry requirements, although English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 is recommended.
The qualification consists of two units, GIC1 and GIC2, delivered through 65 hours of live virtual classes via Zoom over 13 days, supported by the CWD Learning Management System (LMS).
Outline of Syllabus
The syllabus consists of two units and eleven elements
Unit GIC1: Management of Health and Safety
- Why we should manage workplace health and safety
- How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
- Managing risk – understanding people and processes
- Health and safety monitoring and measuring
Unit GIC2: Risk Assessment
- Physical and psychological health
- Musculoskeletal health
- Chemical and biological agents
- General workplace issues
- Work equipment
- Fire
- Electricity
Method of Exam/Assessment
The NEBOSH GIC qualification is assessed digitally through two components using NEBOSH’s online Assessment Platform.
Unit GIC1 (Theory Assessment)
GIC1 is an open-book examination based on a realistic workplace scenario. The examination is released on the NEBOSH exam date and remains open for a 24-hour window, with approximately 5 hours of work expected.
Answers are submitted online. After the examination, learners attend a short, recorded Zoom closing interview with CWD to confirm the authenticity of their submitted work.
The provisional pass mark is 45%.
Unit GIC2 (Practical Assessment)
GIC2 involves a practical risk assessment of the learner’s own workplace, covering four parts:
- Background
- Risk Assessment
- Hazard Prioritisation
- Communicate / Check / Review
The assessment requires approximately 4 hours of work and must be submitted online within 10 working days of the GIC1 examination.
The pass mark is 60% (60/100).
The overall qualification grade is based on the GIC1 examination mark, while GIC2 is assessed as Pass or Refer.
- Pass: 45–64 marks
- Credit: 65–74 marks
- Distinction: 75 marks or above
